Alex Reyes (elbow) will require Tommy John surgery. The worst fears for Reyes have been confirmed, as he’ll now miss the entire 2017 season while in rehab mode. It’s a brutal blow for the Cardinals, who were hoping that their prized top prospect would be a major contributor this season. The good news, if anything, is that Reyes is still just 22 years old. He still has a bright future ahead of him, but it’s just going to be delayed a bit due to this health setback.
Well this sucks. Reyes was the Cardinals top ranked prospect and pitched incredibly well in limited innings last year at only 21 years old. Reyes flashed major upside by striking out over a batter per inning while maintaining an ERA under two and this is just a devastating blow. Coming back from Tommy John is not what it used to be and players are coming back better than ever so it’s not like this is a career ending injury. It just sucks to see a player with such huge potential have a setback like this so early in his career.
In fantasy leagues Reyes was being selected as a late round flyer who possessed big upside in all categories. It looked like he was going to be locked into the rotation and could have logged upwards of 150 innings and some big time strikeout numbers. While he may not pitch in the 2017 season he will be a name to remember for the future.
